The Greenwave softball team picked up where it left off from last year’s state championship.

After going 3-1 in a preseason California tournament, Fallon shut out 3A West foe South Tahoe, 17-0 and 19-0, on Saturday at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.

Fallon travels to North Valleys in a battle of the last two state champions when the Panthers won it all in 2023 before the Wave defeated Fernley last year.

In Saturday’s first game against the Vikings, senior Dana Buckmaster led the team with three hits and three RBIs, and senior Vernita Fillmore singled twice and drove in one. Junior Janessa Bettencourt drove in four runs and singled, sophomore Layla Walker drove in two and tripled, and senior Maddison Keller and sophomore Audrey Fruzza each singled and had an RBI. Sophomore Kalaya Downs finished with two RBIs and sophomore Sutton Yost had one.

Bettencourt got the win in the circle, striking out eight and walking one in three innings while not yielding a hit.

In the second game, Fillmore led the team with four hits, including a pair of doubles, and an RBI. But it was Keller’s bat that did the most damage as she came a triple from the cycle while driving in seven runs. Walker doubled, singled twice and drove in four, and Buckmaster and freshman Peyton Prinz each had two hits with Buckmaster doubling and driving in one and Prinz recording two RBIs. Yost had two RBIs and freshman Bostynn Wright had one.

Prinz pitched three innings, striking out three and giving up one hit against no walks.

After suffering a 2-0 setback to Douglas from the 5A, the Greenwave baseball team split its doubleheader against North Valleys on Saturday in Fallon.

Fallon, which travels to Truckee this weekend, won the first game, 3-1, before falling in the second, 9-7.

Senior Anthony Juarez picked up the win against the Panthers, striking out six and allowing five hits and one walk in 6.1 innings. Senior Luis Lopez-Pinuelas recorded the final two outs for the save.

No one recorded more than a single as seniors Trevor Hyde, James Kelsey and Evan Giovanetti, and juniors Ryan Judd and Zack Adams each had one hit. Adams had the team’s lone RBI. Senior Chase Carnahan, Kelsey, Hyde and Adams each had a stolen base.

In the nightcap, Fallon came back to tie the game at 7 in the sixth inning before the Panthers scored two in the final to salvage the split. Individual statistics were not available.

In the earlier game at Douglas, Judd, Adams and sophomore Tommy Ames combined efforts on the hill. Ames struck out four and Adams fanned three.

Carnahan had three of the team’s four hits while senior Anthony Gonzalez had the other single.
