Family members are remembering Gilbert Lopez “for his infectious laughter and the way he could make anyone smile.”

The description of Lopez comes from a GoFundMe page set up for his family. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office said Lopez was fatally shot outside a downtown Carson City bar the night of April 30.

As of Monday, the GoFundMe page had raised nearly $12,000. Donations can be made at gofundme.com/f/help-gil-lopezs-family-in-their-time-of-loss.

“He was a devoted son, a loving brother who always had your back, a loyal cousin and the most amazing uncle, always ready with a playful joke,” according to the GoFundMe page. “More than anything, Gilbert's heart belonged to his beautiful family. He'll be deeply missed by his children — his daughters and his beloved son — and his baby granddaughter, who will hear endless stories of the wonderful, loving grandpa she was lucky to have.”

Authorities believe Lopez, 46, was shot multiple times after an argument in a bar off Telegraph Street. Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Carson City Sheriff’s Office, a male suspect contacted the 911 dispatch center after the shooting to surrender himself. He was later arrested and charged with open murder, battery with a deadly weapon and carrying a concealed weapon.

“Gilbert's life was tragically cut short when he was shot and killed in an unforeseen incident. Dealing with this loss out of state has added a considerable financial burden on top of everything else,” said the Lopez family’s GoFundMe page.

Cheryl Lopez, mother of Gilbert, told the Appeal on Monday her son was a friendly person who had been living in Carson City for several months, working at a car dealership.

“He made everybody feel comfortable around him,” she said.
