The Churchill County School Board approved the hiring of a new principal April 30 at a special meeting.

Deana Porretta, who has a doctorate in education, has been named principal of Churchill County Middle School effective July 1. Superintendent Derild Parsons said Porretta was chosen as the top applicant from a pool of five candidates. She is currently the vice principal at CCMS where she began working in 2018 as a math teacher, physical education teacher and track and field coach. Porretta has also taught in other districts since 2010.

“Dr. Porretta brings a blend of professional expertise and dedication to the Fallon community,” Parsons said. “Her leadership and deep understanding of education and the values of our district make her the right person to lead CCMS.”

As part of her first 90 days plan, Poretta will conduct interviews to fill middle school vice principal positions.

Porretta, a Fallon native and Churchill County High School graduate, served for seven years in the U.S. Army. She and her husband, Jay, have been married for 24 years, and they have two adult daughters. As a veteran and military spouse, Porretta said she understands the importance of supporting the district’s military families.

Porretta holds a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance from Austin Peay State University, a master’s degree in education with a concentration in teaching mathematics from Kaplan University and a doctorate of education from Nova Southeastern University.

As vice principal, Porretta’s leadership guided the district’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports Team to earning the top honor of Diamond Award from the Nevada Association for Positive Behavior Support. She has also played a key role in implementing district-wide initiatives, including the Learner Centered Framework, KnowledgeWorks, Modern Teacher, and the i-Ready and Savvas curriculums.

“I am deeply grateful and incredibly excited to embark on this journey as your new principal,” Porretta said. “I look forward to working alongside our dedicated teachers, supportive families and wonderful students to build an even brighter future for our school and community.”
