CCHS, Oasis golf teams qualify for state tournaments

The Churchill County High School and Oasis Academy boys golf teams are heading to state.

The Greenwave captured the regular-season title by winning its final two tournaments this week at South Tahoe and North Valleys.

Fallon, which finished second in last year’s state tournament, qualified as a team for the two-day tournament on May 13-14 at the Ruby View Golf Course in Elko.

Oasis Academy finished second in the 2A East Region tournament on Tuesday to advance to state. Only the top two teams from the 2A East, West and southern regions qualified for the 2A state tournament on May 13-14 at The Club at Sunrise in Las Vegas.

Fallon won the 3A Northern title with 81 points, two ahead of Elko, after both teams entered the week tied in the standings. There is no regional tournament. The top three teams and top six golfers outside of those teams qualified for state.

Fallon won five of the eight regular-season tournaments, finishing second in the other three to Elko.

Fallon senior Colin Shishido was named the region’s MVP after finishing with a stroke average of 76. Teammate Pakela Malama-Gomes finished second with an average of 76.9 and Dierks Hammon was fifth at 78.

At the Lake Tahoe Golf Course on Monday, Fallon won the tournament 306-335 over Elko.

Shishido led the team with a tournament-best 71 followed by Hammon at 74 and Malama-Gomes at 76. Wyatt Sorensen shot an 85, Drake Reid carded a 93 and Matthias Loop finished with a 96.

On Tuesday at North Valleys, Fallon won the tournament 309-320 over Elko.

Hammon had a tournament-best 72 followed by Shishido, Loop and Malama-Gomes, who tied at 79. Reid shot an 83, and Sorensen finished with an 87.

OASIS ACADEMY

The Bighorns finished the single-day region tournament with a score of 392 at the Toana Vista Golf Course in West Wendover on Tuesday.

The host school won the tournament with a score of 381. The top score belonged to West Wendover’s William Sherman, who shot an 80.

Kaden Detomasi led Oasis Academy with a fourth-place finish after shooting an 85. Benton Snow and Eli Jones tied for eighth at 101. Dallin Sorensen shot a 105, Elijah Mitchell carded a 111 and Jackson Snow rounded out the team with a 129.
