Douglas High School softball took out some frustration from Wednesday’s loss to Spanish Springs by plating nine runs in the first inning of 16-1 win over McQueen in the consolation of the Class 5A North regional tournament.
The first seven Tiger hitters all reached base with at least singles and all of them came around to score.
In total, Douglas sent 13 hitters to the plate in the first inning.
“Everyone just hit line drives. It was a good inning,” said junior catcher Peyton Simpson. “I’m just kind of looking for my pitch and working on team hitting and not just hitting for myself.”
Simpson, who ended the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, has been calling the games behind the plate for the Tigers recently.
“I make sure I’m on the same page as my pitcher, doing pregame stat checking,” said Simpson. “It’s important to me because I know I have my pitcher’s back and she trusts me and what I’m calling.”
The third inning was a similar story as Douglas tallied six more runs to jump out to a commanding, 15-1, lead.
Cam McLelland led the way with a 4-for-4 day at the plate and three RBIs while Annie Hill and Cam Coats each drove in two RBIs apiece.
Shortstop Ava Gildea went 1-for-3 with a three-run double in the third inning of the win.
Peyton Simpson ended the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Douglas will play Friday at 2 p.m. at Bishop Manogue High School against the Miners. Bishop Manogue beat Damonte Ranch, 11-6, in the other consolation round matchup Thursday.
The winner of the Tigers and Miners' consolation game will play again Friday evening at 4:30 p.m. against the loser of the semifinal between No. 1 Reed and No. 2 Spanish Springs.
