Carson High School senior Anne Davis has been shaving time off her 100-meter hurdle marks since her freshman season.
It’s an event Davis has literally put her blood, sweat and tears into and her dedication paid off Friday afternoon at the Class 5A North regional track and field meet at Douglas High School.
Davis got an excellent start and put together a flawless race to cross the line in 15.78 seconds, winning the regional title.
“To finally reach that moment, I think it means so much more than if I had just gotten it, the first time that I had set the goal to be regional champion,” said an emotional Davis. “I’ve been trying to break 16 (seconds) pretty much all season.”
Last spring as a junior, Davis took second place behind Douglas’ Katelyn Coons.
This year, the roles were reversed.
The 100-meter hurdles is a sprint and knocking off tenths, even hundredths of a second, can be mentally grueling.
Davis, who was close to getting under the 16-second mark earlier this spring, said focusing on technique is always a priority.
“Getting my trail leg faster and smoother, that can cut off milliseconds, but milliseconds can mean like a lot in a big race,” said Davis. “16 (seconds) has just been such a big barrier.”
The 100-meter hurdles will be Davis’ only state event after she was scratched from remainder of her long jump attempts while readying for the 100-meter hurdles.
In the long jump, she finished sixth with a mark of 15-7.5
The senior doesn’t have plans to compete in track and field in college, making her win in one of her final meets that much sweeter.
“I'm mostly just excited to have a fun last meet with my teammates,” said Davis. “I'm not planning on running track in college, so state would be like my last official meet.”
