A wildfire evacuation exercise with Carson City’s Lakeview residents is set for May 28 followed by a community fair open to the public.
According to a news release, Carson City emergency personnel, supported by the Nevada Department of Transportation and Nevada State Police, “will perform a full-scale evacuation exercise in coordination with the Lakeview residents.”
The evacuation exercise will occur from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. followed by a temporary evacuation point community fair at the Carson City Community Gym, located at 851 E. William St., from 10 a.m. to noon.
“Carson City residents are invited to the community fair to learn from state and city departments, including utilities, insurance representatives, volunteer organizations and local businesses,” said the release.
Fair admission is free. The evacuation exercise will have “soft road closures below Combs Canyon near Western Nevada College and Hobart Road off Old 395,” according to the release.
"These exercises play an important role in helping our community prepare for an emergency,” said Carson City Deputy Emergency Manager Jon Bakkedahl. “We will have fire engines, traffic controls, and other first responders assimilating the exercise of evacuating Lakeview to the temporary evacuation point where there will be the community fair, which is for all residents of Carson City to attend and learn what they can do to make our community safer."
In addition to the Lakeview exercise, other agencies are getting ready for wildfires.
On May 29, the Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators will conduct a large-scale drill that will affect the South Washoe Valley, Lakeview and Combs Canyon areas. For information, contact Adam Mayberry at amayberry@tmfpd.us or 775-326-6073.
