Dayton High’s Rhys Evans stands atop the podium after winning the Class 3A state title in the pole vault at Moapa Valley with a personal record of 15 feet.
The Class 2A, 3A and 5A state track and field meets were all held in Southern Nevada last weekend.
In Class 2A and 3A – held at Moapa Valley – Dayton High School senior Rhys Evans finished his preps career with a state championship.
Evans won the Class 3A state pole vault title with a clearance of 15 feet, setting a personal record.
His height was six inches better than second place and a foot better than third.
Evans had cleared 14 feet once in official competition this spring prior to state.
Fellow senior Macy Lieb took fourth in the girls long jump for the Dust Devils with a mark of 15 feet, 11 inches.
In the girls high jump, sophomore Madison Tinsley was seventh with a final clearance of 4-8.
Tinsley took fifth in the girls pole vault, getting over eight feet.
The boys team finished tied for 18th overall with 10 team points while the Dust Devil girls were 14th with 11.50 team points.
SUFKA DEFENDS POLE VAULT TITLE
Sierra Lutheran’s Sydney Sufka defended her Class 2A state pole vault crown.
Sufka cleared 9 feet even in the finals to win the event before making three attempts at 10-1.
The junior set a personal record this spring with a clearance of 10 feet at the Carson league meet.
Last spring she won the state title in the 2A pole vault with a mark of 7-6.
Sufka was seventh in the 100-meter dash in 14.11 for the Falcons and finished fifth in the triple jump (30-5.5).
Michael Miles took second in the Class 2A state shot put with a best throw of 50 feet, four inches.
The senior finished in third in the discus with a best throw of 138-8.5.
Clayton Jones competed in the shot put as well, taking sixth with a throw of 40-5.25.
Senior Nathan Tack was seventh in the 100-meter dash in 11.97.
Fellow senior Chandler Ricks was sixth in the 3,200 in a time of 10:54.50.
Sierra Lutheran boys 4x100 relay team – Miles, Gabriel Colonna, Scott Schroder and Tack – was eighth in 48.58.
Daniel Poole finished eighth in the high jump with a mark of 5-2.
In the girls 200-meter dash, sophomore Sofia Gilson took seventh in 28.88.
Gilson (1:01.62) and Kayla Carpenter (1:01.93) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 400-meter dash.
Carpenter took fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:35.76. She was fourth in the shot put at 30-8.5.
In the girls 100-meter hurdles, freshman Dylann Braun grabbed bronze with a time of 17.62, missing second by one-hundredth of a second.
Braun did get a silver in the 300-meter hurdles in 49.29.
Sufka, Carpenter, Gilson and Rukhsana Khan took second in the girls 4x100 meter relay, finishing in 53.59.
Khan, a freshman, also competed in the long jump where she took sixth with a mark of 14-5.
The Falcon girls scored 60 team points to finish in sixth. The Sierra Lutheran boys were 10th with 24 team points.
SENATORS END SPRING AT STATE
Carson High School concluded its spring track and field season at the Class 5A state meet at Desert Oasis High School.
In the boys 3,200-meter run, senior Sawyer Macy was sixth in 9:48.37 while junior Sean Thornton was right on his heels in seventh in 9:48.74.
The boys 4x800 relay team, consisting of Thornton, Alex Miner, Quinn Kuchnicki and Jaren Thornburg, took seventh in 8:14.83.
Carson’s girls 4x800 team of Vea Miner, Nastasia Sulprizio, Allison Peachay and Hannah Budd were sixth in 10:09.81.
Coming off a Class 5A North regional crown, Anne Davis finished sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.98.
Hannah Krueger finished eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 32-9.75.
The Carson girls finished in 18th place as a team with seven team points while the boys were 17th with seven team points.
