Comstock history lecture series kicking off Oct. 13 in Dayton

The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture and the Foundation’s Community Advisory Group are launching the Comstock History Lecture Series, events focusing on Comstock history.

Lectures are on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, except Nov. 24 and Dec. 22, at locations in Dayton, Silver City, Gold Hill and Virginia City.

Stony Tennant, a local historian, will give the first lecture about Abner Blackburn, the first person to discover gold in Nevada, the discovery that eventually led to the Comstock Lode, at 5 p.m. Oct. 13 at Dayton State Park.

Pat Nylan, curator of the Historical Society of Dayton Valley Museum, will give the second lecture and a short tour of the Rock Point Mill at 4 p.m. Oct. 27 at Dayton State Park. Park in the northeast corner of the Gold Ranch Casino parking lot.

The Grosh Brothers by Robert Stewart will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 10 at a location yet to be announced.

Joe Curtis will talk about how the mining bonanza affected everyday life and the business community in the Comstock at 5 p.m. Dec. 8 at a location yet to be announced.
