Education achievements: Carson woman achieves at Furman University

Emma Kortemeier of Carson City was named to the spring 2014 dean’s list at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. The dean’s list is composed of full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade point average of 3.4 or higher on a four-point system.

Kortemeier is the daughter of Curtis and Winifred Kortemeier.

Casas awarded $5,000 scholarship

Abowd & Rose Financial Group, in partnership with Dr. Jose and Soraya Aguirre, awarded Ana Casas, a Carson High School senior, a $5,000 academic scholarship.

Casas moved with her mother to the United States from Columbia 12 years ago. She maintained a grade-point average of 4.33 and is a part of Carson High School’s Advanced Placement and Honors programs. She is the historian for the school’s HOSA-Future Health Professionals and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Casas volunteers as a candy striper at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. Upon graduation, she plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno, majoring in biology. She aspires to become a physician’s assistant.

To qualify for the Abowd & Rose Financial Group Leadership Scholarship, students are required to write a two-page essay detailing how they have managed their finances in the past and how they plan on demonstrating financial responsibility throughout their college education. This is the third year this scholarship has been offered. It was increased this year from $3,500 to $5,000.

Area students achieve at Gonzaga University

Local students were named to the president’s and dean’s list for the spring 2014 semester at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash.

Caitlin Sinclair of Carson City and Nicholas Winstead of Gardnerville were named to the president’s list. Students must earn a 3.7 to 4.0 grade-point average to be listed.

Mia Cavilia and Andrew Mercer, both of Carson City, were named to the dean’s list. Students must earn a 3.5 to 3.69 grade-point average to be listed.
