Cathleen Allison/Nevada Appeal Eric Bressler is the new general manager at the Plaza Hotel.

Week 1 on the job: new General Manager Eric Bressler is introduced to the five properties, 275 total hotel rooms and the six-member management staff that he will oversee.

Week 2: Bressler, 38, heads the renovation of the 25-room hotel, the oldest building on the Plaza Hotel campus in downtown Carson City, which will be completed by the middle of this month.

Week 3 and beyond: getting involved in the community.

One way Bressler is doing that is by offering rooms free to non-revenue-generating groups.

Bressler said it would be more accurate to call him an “area manager” of the Mallard Realty hotel properties in Carson City.

They include the Plaza Hotel, the Rand, the Silver Queen, the Pioneer and the Plaza Convention Center.

“This job was a great opportunity to take some properties to the next level,” he said. “The city’s growth gives a lot of opportunities to people in the hospitality industry.”

Carson City as a tourist destination is an important aspect of hotels. Bressler arranged to have the Plaza as a host hotel with the convention and visitors bureau and the Brewery Arts Center, both important tourism generators.

“We offer an alternative to hotel/casinos for those who don’t want to stay at a casino. And we’re 100 percent smoke-free.”

Bressler lives in Reno, but is looking for a home in Carson City.

He was the director of operations for the Tahoe Biltmore before starting with the Plaza on Jan. 23.

At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, he earned a bachelor’s degree in hotel administration.

He’s worked at hotels on the Strip and Fremont Street in Las Vegas.

The Sierra Nevada offered what he couldn’t find so easily in the desert.

“I coveted the idea of moving up to Carson City or Reno when I lived in Las Vegas. I’m a fly fisherman. I like hiking and snowboarding.”

The Plaza Hotel is at 801 S. Carson St.
