Retailers expect record Halloween business

Staff Report

The Retail Association of Nevada projects consumers will spend a record $127 million on costumes, candy and decorations to celebrate Halloween this year.

Spokesman Bryan Wachter said consumers are expected to spend $47.7 million of that total on costumers. As always, witches and Batman characters will be among the most popular costumes.

He said after an 11-year reign, the princess was dethroned by action figures and superhero costumes as the most popular children’s costume.

Candy will generate another $37.5 million in sales followed closely by decorations at $36.3 million.

Greeting cards are expected to bring in about $5.9 million.

Nearly a quarter of celebrants have waited until now to do their shopping.

As for trick-or-treaters, Wachter said 71 percent of American homes plan to hand out candy this year.
