Carson City man guilty of purse snatching

by staff

A Carson City man pleaded guilty in justice court Thursday to stealing a woman’s purse Nov. 22 at a North Carson Street casino.

James C. Valerie, 21, was sentenced to 15 days jail time and 40 hours of community service for approaching a woman playing slot machines and grabbing her purse. A 90-day sentence was suspended.

Several minutes after the crime, Valerie was seen getting into a vehicle in the parking lot of an adjoining casino. Deputies stopped him near the intersection of Spear and Roop streets about 3 p.m.

Deputy District Attorney Matt Jensen said the crime wasn’t considered a “purse snatching” because the woman wasn’t carrying the purse at the time of the theft.
