College junior recognized for high grades at Nebraska U
Daniel DiLoreto, of Carson City, a junior at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln’s business administration college, was honored with high scholars at an April convocation for having a cumulative grade-point average of at least a 3.6 throughout his university career.
WNCC scholarship recipients announced
Beth Mandeville and Keriann Zinke, both students at Western Nevada Community College were recent recipients of the Sunset Rotary Scholarship.
Silver City library news
The Silver City Volunteer Library owns a new set of 2006 World Book Encyclopedias, thanks to a donation by the Lyon County libraries. Also donated were a 2005 set of medieval and early-modern world reference books by the Oxford University Press and four sets of children’s encyclopedias, including Grolier’s 10-volume Children’s Encyclopedia, Grolier’s Science and Technology set, Grolier’s Animal Encyclopedia and a Wildlife of the World 13-volume set.
The library is in need of two sturdy, wooden bookcases to house a collection of Civil War reference books recently donated by the Nevada Civil War Volunteers. Call Quest Lakes at 847-0742 to donate.
Carson Sertoma Club looking for partners
The Sertoma Club, which is looking for organizational partnerships, engages in fundraising activities for Carson City children who have hearing and speech difficulties, cancer or diabetes.
Partners receive banner advertising at all Sertoma fundraisers and events, a four-member team in the golf tournament and tee sponsorship at the golf tournament. Partnerships begin at $300. For information, call Frank Taylor at 885-7579.
Woods Center receives ESL tutoring grant
The English-as-a-second-language in-home program, supported by the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, recently received a $2,011 grant through ProLiteracy Worldwide’s National Book scholarship Fund.
Educational materials from the scholarship fund help meet the needs of adult literacy students and tutors.
Recent students of the ESL program in-home program who also obtained U.S. citizenship include Fabiana Vega and Alicia Flores, both of Carson City. For more on the program, call Director Florence Phillips at 888-2021.
University students win at food-marketing competition
University of Nevada, Reno students studying agribusiness took top awards at the recent Western Collegiate Food Marketing Competition in Pasadena, Calif. Honors included first place for the product most likely to succeed, second place for best PowerPoint presentation and top five finishes for innovative marketing idea and overall competition.
The awards were received for a marketing plan for “Flavored Gourmet Beef Patties,” a product developed at the University’s Wolf Pack Meats, an educational meat processing facility.
