Easter hunt organizers scrambling for volunteers

Sometimes volunteer jobs aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

In their second year of organizing the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Governor’s Field, Carson City Kiwanis is in need of volunteers to help boil, color and hide Easter eggs.

The community event began with the 20-30 Club, then the Carson City Jaycees took over for quite a number of years. With the Jaycees group disbanding, Kiwanis’ 85 members took over.

Bobby Bean, chairman of the Easter Egg Hunt, said they’ve ordered 18,000 eggs from Smith’s.

“We pick them up on Good Friday, then cook and color them Saturday, and hide them Sunday.”

With the addition of 2,000 plastic eggs with surprises inside, Kiwanis is placing 20,000 total eggs for hunts Easter Sunday.

Bean said they had 65 volunteers cooking last year, which included members of the Nevada National Guard. The guardsmen are not able to help this year, so Bean’s in need of volunteers.

“At this point we only have about 30 volunteers. We need another 20-30,” he said. “And for the coloring, the more the merrier.”

Bean said they could also use people willing to let them borrow turkey deep fryers, which they use for boiling the eggs.

“We’ll have the water, salt, vinegar and coloring – anywhere from four to six colors …”

An egg-stuffing station will be set up for filling the plastic eggs. They will be filled with candy and prizes. Some will have certificates for Jack in the Box, stuffed animals, chocolate Easter bunnies, kites, electric tooth brushes, and 10 grand prizes of bicycles. Two bicycles will be given to each age group.

Those who want to volunteer March 22 should go to Borda’s Auto, 1646 Old Hot Springs Road (off Goni Road), between 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Volunteers are needed at 8 a.m. Easter Sunday to place the eggs at Governor’s Field, and to assist with the special needs hunt at 11 a.m., and general hunt at 1 p.m.
