Students take the reading challenge

Twenty-one students at Jacks Valley Elementary School in the Douglas County School District “took the challenge” and read for 30 minutes a day for 10 days. During this time, they collected pledges from sponsors. The children chose free books equal to 50 percent of what they raised in pledges. The remaining 50 percent was given to the school in free books. Students participating logged 10,372 minutes reading and collected $1,236.

Makaela Bigley, a first-grader in Tracie Moultrup’s and Brandi Torres’ class, raised $175 in pledges. Brayden Campbell, a sixth grader in Susan Hoffman’s class, logged 1,885 minutes of reading.

Contributions to the program were made by Usborne Books, Wallace Theaters, Baskin Robbins Ice Cream and Round Table Pizza.
