Visitors to the rodeos and other goings-on at the Dayton Valley Events Center will soon get some relief.

The Lyon County Commission has approved sending out to bid plans for a new restroom/concession stand at the Schaad Lane facility.

The concession stand will be funded by a grant along with matching funds from the county.

Participants in center events now have to use a Port-a-potty, and there are no concession operations.

Winston “Stony” Tennant, a member of the Dayton Valley Events Center advisory board, said the restroom/concession stand would go a long way toward helping the center to become financially self-sufficient.

“This will finally get us to the point where we will have enough income that we won’t have to depend on the county,” he said.

A new septic system for the 620-square-foot building will also be part of the project.

The cost of the project is estimated at $200,000, of which $75,000 will come from a federal Lands and Water Conservation Fund grant. The county will fund the remainder of the project’s cost from its Surplus Building Maintenance Reserve Fund.

The events center is on 80 acres leased from the Bureau of Land Management. Tennant hopes to eventually obtain from BLM 600 more acres adjacent to the existing facility.

He said he hopes to be able to include a pavilion, more bleachers, more parking and camping areas with RV hookups, and a new road on the ridge to access areas for ATVs and horses so that the property can be used for more than rodeos.
