Faith & Insight: Whatever happened to Jimmie Rodgers?
For the Nevada Appeal
Do you remember the hit songs, “Honeycomb” and “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine?” Jimmie Rodgers recorded these and 23 more charted singles between 1957 and 1967.
Then in the winter of ’67 Jimmie’s career abruptly ended and he disappeared from public life. What happened?
Jimmie recalls, “I was going home one night after working all day. Some guy pulled up behind me and blinked his lights. My conductor had been following me and I thought it was him so I pulled over and stopped. Some guy walked up to the window. It was 2:30 in the morning just before Christmas. I rolled down my window and that’s the last thing I remember.”
The unknown man hit Jimmie repeatedly with a piece of steel or pipe. Jimmie’s skull was shattered and his other injuries were severe.
It took Jimmie more than 20 years to learn to walk and talk again. Yet, on his 55th birthday, Jimmie Rodgers ran from Westlake, Calif., to the ocean.
Why didn’t Jimmie give up? How did he overcome such a beating? Jimmie explains, “God came into my life and really changed my life and really saved me.”
Jimmie’s inspirational story illustrates the truth of the Apostle Paul’s words, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” You can too!
