Gov. Gibbons: no decision yet on marriage

(AP) – Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons said Monday no decisions have been made on whether his marriage of more than 21 years to first lady Dawn Gibbons will continue or end in divorce or separation.

“It’s just a personal issue. We haven’t made any decisions yet,” Gibbons said. “I don’t think that we’re going to work our problems out in your newspaper.”

The first-term Republican governor, who owns a home in Reno, also said that he is living at the governor’s mansion in Carson City but “I stay in Reno every now and then, whenever it’s convenient.”

Aides and advisers to the governor had confirmed previously that the Gibbonses have been going through some personal hard times, although they didn’t elaborate.

No Nevada governor has divorced while in office, although two divorced shortly after their terms expired.

Gibbons served five terms in Congress before winning the governor’s seat in 2006. While Gibbons was in Congress, Dawn Gibbons continued to live in Reno. She also entered politics and served three terms in the state Assembly.

When Gibbons, who flew fighter and reconnaissance jets in the Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars, decided to run for governor, Dawn Gibbons sought the 2nd Congressional District seat he was giving up, but lost in the primary.
