Nevada issues November ballot questions booklet

Nevada Appeal Capitol Bureau

The Secretary of State’s office has issued its 2016 Statewide Ballot Questions information booklet.

Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske said the book provides the exact wording of each equation as well as a summary of what it would do, fiscal impacts it could have and arguments both for and against passage.

There are four questions on the state ballot this year.

Questions 1 and 2 would pass a new statute or amend existing statute. Both were presented to the 2015 Nevada Legislature which declined to take action, which sends them to the General Election ballot.

Question 1 would mandate background checks on all firearm purchases and transfers except to immediate family members.

Question 2 would legalize recreational use of marijuana and regulate it in the same manner as alcohol is currently.

Question 3 is the Energy Choice initiative that would make electric markets in the state open and competitive. At present NvEnergy has pretty much a monopoly on electricity service in Nevada.

Question 4 would remove the sales tax from purchases of durable medical equipment and oxygen supplies.

The booklet can be found in the Election Center of the Secretary of State’s website at http://www.nvsos.gov.
