Heavenly hopes to open today

Nevada Appeal News Service

With a new storm on the way and a base depth of 18-24 inches, Heavenly Ski Resort plans to open its California Trail today.

But today’s storm could be a double-edged sword for the resort, since forecast high winds could interfere with lift operations.

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind watch affecting Douglas County for the day, with predicted winds of 25-40 mph and gusts of 60-70 mph possible. Wind gusts over the Sierra ridges are forecast to hit 125 mph.

The season hasn’t been kind to the resort, so far, with 3-4 inches of snow falling during the last week and only 8-11 inches so far this season. The rest of the resort’s snow has all been made, with Heavenly’s snowmaking system operating more than 180 hours.

Heavenly asks that skiers and riders observe all posted signs and warnings, especially during the early season. Closed trails may contain hazards due to early snow coverage. Please keep off closed trails and out of closed areas for safety reasons.

Heavenly will operate for skiing and snowboarding, weekends from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kirkwood Ski Resort is still planning to open sometime between Thanksgiving and Dec. 1, according to their Web site.

According to the National Weather Service, Stateline could receive up to 4 inches of new snow in the storm.

The chance of snow will increase this morning and last through early Saturday.
