Holiday Memories: Rocking around the Christmas tree

Rose Etchison

Christmas 1991 was one of my fondest.

I was pregnant with our first child, and the one thing I wanted for Christmas was a rocking chair.

I threw a bunch of hints to my husband, hoping he got the hint.

I woke up Christmas morning, checked out the tree and there was no chair, not that I expected to see one. We lived in an apartment at the time and I don’t think I would have missed one lying around.

As we always did on Christmas day, we went over to my father-in-law’s, so I thought I had one last chance of getting my chair. We walked in the door and I immediately looked under the tree. But no chair.

After we were finished opening gifts, my father-in-law called me in the kitchen to ask me a question. When I came back out into the living room, I saw the most beautiful rocker and matching ottoman sitting in the middle of the living room floor. Needless to say, I spent the rest of the day sitting in my chair with my husband and father-in-law sitting behind me, taking turns pushing the chair for me.

I’m not sure who was happier that Christmas, me or the men pushing me.
