James L. Shinn

James L. Shinn, 84, a Minden resident for the past nine years, died Sept. 2, 2005, at home. He was born Feb. 13, 1921, in Jay County, Ind., to Clyde E. and Alma Ester Harter Shinn.
He married Carolyn Charlton.
He served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years including World War II aboard the USS Lexington as plane captain for the first Naval Flying Ace Butch O’Hare. He was stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas; Norfolk, Va.; Port Lyautey, French Morocco; Naples, Italy; Alameda, Calif.; San Diego; Sangley Point, Philippines; and Treasure Island, Calif.
After retiring from the military, he was appointed Veterans Service Officer in Lake County, Calif., for two years. He was elected Lake County clerk-recorder and served for 12 years. Retiring again and living in Nice, Calif., he worked in real estate for four years before retiring permanently, dividing his time between Woodfords and Tucson, Ariz.
He was affiliated with the Hartley Masonic Lodge 199, Lakeport; the Aahmes Oakland Scottish Rite; the Lexington CV2 Fighting Squadron 3 Association; the Tailhook Association; and the Order of Eastern Star 137, Past Patron, Lakeport.
Among his survivors are his wife of 60 years of Minden; and daughter, Linda Everson, and grandchildren Andy Everson and Katie Everson, all of Carson City.
