And the winner is …

Congratulations to Pauline Friedrich for winning the beautiful Sycamore tree in our CAPS tree drawing. A huge thank you to Joe and Mike Bailey the owners of The Flower Tree for sponsoring this fund raiser for CAPS, The Flower Tree, has been a supporter of CAPS for over 10 years. There are countless animals who have benefited by this commitment. We especially want to thank everyone who bought tickets. I know we could only have one winner but each and every one of you are winners as your generosity has helped the animals.

Sitting at the dog park a few days ago we were discussing the end of summer. That led to the question what exactly does the dog days of summer mean?

The dog days of summer dates back to the times of the Romans who associated the hot weather with the star Sirius. They considered Sirius to be the “Dog Star” because it is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major, known as the dog of Orion. Sirius is also the brightest star in the night sky. Next time you look up at the sky find the brightest star and imagine that man’s best friend is looking out for you from afar.

Speaking of the dog park I am always amazed by the number of rescue dogs who are there. I asked one of the regulars if his dogs were rescues and he told me his dog Maria, had rescued him. He was the rescue and Maria the rescuer. Of course Maria has buddies Georgie, Danny and Marsie, all rescuers. When Maria and buddies arrive the party begins.

Our conversation then turned to the lady who was petting her dog, Freckles. Without hesitation she explained that she was a rescue also. Freckles had chosen her and they are BFF’s, best friends forever.

Right now CAPS has many BFF’s just looking for a person to rescue. Now is the time to consider finding that BFF for your life.

Upcoming events at CAPS

On Sept. 13 at Walmart, CAPS will feature, Roxy a Kissing Pup, who will be waiting to meet new friends. Roxy is a lab who is looking for her BFF. Please come and meet Roxy and spend some time with the CAPS volunteers. Ki, who usually greets and meets in the kissing booth is on vacation but he will return in October in fine form. He loves his job and looks forward to being back in the booth. He also loves the chicken nugget treats he gets when his shift is over.

Our CAPS annual garage sale will be held on Sept. 19–20. Everyone at CAPS is busily gathering items from friends and family, but we need lots of stuff for this to be outstanding. If you have anything to donate, we would be oh so grateful .We would appreciate donations of gently used household, garage, yard, pet and whatever-else items (no clothing please).

Thanks to Spring Valley Rentals, who have provided a storage unit (at 1105 Taylor Place) to hold donated items.

CAPS volunteers will be at unit 82A from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday and Sept. 13, to receive your donations.

If you can’t make it to our storage or items are too big to handle … we will come get them! Please call Rita Hand at home at 775-423-6346 or cell:775-427-3376, and she will schedule a pickup for you. If you don’t reach her please leave a message, and she will return your call.

Paws up to Betty Duncan, who has written this article for CAPS the past two years. Betty has been a source of information and inspiration for all pet owners and CAPS rescue.

Thank you for your dedication and insight. Happy trails to you on your next project; you leave very big paws to fill.
