The time for tinkering is over.
Now it becomes who gets the job done.
The Fallon baseball and softball teams get into the thick of their Northern Division I-A schedule today, as the Greenwave hosts Truckee at 3 p.m. at the Edward Arciniega Complex followed by doubleheaders at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
On Tuesday, the Lady Wave smashed rival Fernley, 10-2, while the baseball team lost, 6-3.
“I think you come out with the same mentality as we have,” Fallon softball coach Bill Archer said. “We had a good win yesterday against Fernley.”
Leading the way for the baseball team is junior catcher Tyler Bagby, who is hitting .462 with five RBIs, two home runs, a double and triple.
Also out to a hot start are junior centerfielders Dalton Frank (.417, two RBIs, two doubles), senior Cody Long (.308, four runs, three RBIs) and freshman Jack Swisher (.333, five RBIs, two doubles).
“For the improvement, we got to get to back the basics and get back to our swings,” Fallon coach Lester de Braga said.
On the mound, senior Tristen Salazar has recorded a 3.60 ERA in 11 2/3 innings with three appearances. He has struck out eight, walked five and allowed six earned runs.
Freshman Alex Mendez and sophomore Riley Williams have provided depth to the staff. Mendez holds a 1.11 ERA in eight innings with six strikeouts, two walks and one earned run.
Williams, meanwhile, sports a 1.40 ERA with six strikeouts and five walks in five innings.
“Our focus all year has been win two of three,” Fallon coach Lester de Braga said. “Defensively, we have to get back on track.”
Truckee, meanwhile, has opened the season 0-5 at the Mike Bearman Memorial Tournament last weekend. Last year’s regional runner-ups have numerous newcomers to the roster.
On the softball diamond, senior Rileigh Ricken leads the club with a .500 average. In addition, she’s tallied three RBIs, two triples and a double.
Following Ricken’s lead are sophomore Paige Thorn and junior Ali Tedford. Thorn is hitting .294 with a team-high four RBIS, whle Tedford has two RBIs and a pair of doubles.
In the circle, Ricken was dominant against Fernley allowing eight hits, two runs — one earned — with one strikeout and no walks.
“Truckee formulates a decent opponent,” Archer said. “We expect our kids to focus on the three areas of the game (defense, offense and pitching).
