Bighorns lose a close one at McQueen

Staff Report

The Oasis Academy Bighorns traveled to McQueen High School to take on the Northwest Manahoacs (McQueen) and lost, 8-6, on Saturday.

The College Prep Bighorns have a busy schedule next week with two games on Saturday, starting against the Reno Huskies at 12:30 p.m. at Reno High School followed by a game with Sierra Foothills High School in the High Sierra Shootout tournament at 5 p.m.

The Bighorns started off fast as usual with four goals in the first quarter. Midfielder Tristan Rodarte led off the scoring in the first minute of the game.

Attackman Trey Rooks added a goal before midfielder Josh Carter scored another long range goal off a split dodge which put the Bighorns up, 3-0.

The Manahoacs then got on the board, but the Bighorns held off the comeback with another goal from Rooks. With less than ten seconds left in the first half attackman Nick Delgado scored a wide angle goal from just above the goal line to end the half 5-1.

In the second half, the Bighorns surrendered three quick goals which allowed the Manahoacs back into the game.

Rodarte then scored his second of the game, but the tide was already turning. The Manahoacs added another two goals in the third, tying the game.

Starting the fourth quarter tied, the Bighorns struggled to maintain control of the ball, with passes going high or being dropped. The Manahoacs took advantage with a goal in the fourth to take their first lead of the game.

Pressing for the equalizer, the Bighorns took a slashing penalty and, while shorthanded, took a flagrant foul resulting in a three minute penalty.

Down two men for the final minute, the Bighorns pressured the Manahoacs who tried their best to run out the clock.

A late turnover allowed the Bighorns a chance to tie, but a missed pass ended their hopes. With the Bighorns pressuring desperately, the Manahoacs managed an insurance goal, and McQueen put down Fallon’s last shot at a comeback.
