The Nevada Highway Patrol continues to investigate two fatal crashes that occurred late last week.

On Thursday night on Interstate 80 east of Fernley near the Nightingale exit, an 18-wheeler hit a pedestrian and killed him. The crash occurred about 11:30 p.m.

The Churchill County Sheriff’s Office responded to the vicinity of mile marker 65 following a report of a body found near the fog line on the west bound lanes. The CCSO said the remains were of a man whose identity was confirmed through fingerprints; however, the CCSO said the man’s name cannot be released at this time due to ongoing efforts to notify next of kin.

The CCSO is performing the coroner duties.

On Saturday at about 2:45 p.m. a motorcycle and vehicle collided near Middlegate, which is about 45 miles east of Fallon on U.S. Highway 50.

The CCSO said the collision occurred near mile marker 42 and resulted in the death of Drew Alan Smith, 32, a former resident of Fallon. Additionally, the CCSO said Smith was operating a motorcycle that was struck from the rear by a 2014 Jeep SUV operated by 62-year-old driver from San Jose, Calif.

The NHP Fallon-Fernley District handled the follow-up reports but forwarded the information to Reno to the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT).
