Churchill County deputy’s items still not recovered

Staff Report

Some residents have expressed concern after a burglary suspect took items from the home of a Churchill County Sheriff’s deputy on Friday.

According to the Fallon Police Department, which is investigating the burglary because of potential CCSO conflict of interest, said the deputy’s home is located outside city limits. Capt. Vern Ulrich said stolen items included a Glock .40 S&W caliber pistol, a sheriff’s badge, police radio, miscellaneous police equipment and electronics. Ulrich said the radio was recovered. along with some personal property.

“Equipment was stolen, not the car,” said Ulrich, trying to address any fears. “There is no indication any uniforms were taken.”

Three Facebook comments on the Lahontan Valley News site expressed concerns about an impersonator.

Sheriff Ben Trotter said, however, the stolen badge was not department issued.

“It was a personalized, commemorative sheriff officer’s badge.” Trotter said. “It was not a regular star but a round star.”

Since no patrol vehicle was taken, Trotter said motorists should encounter no problems, but he said the department also uses unmarked vehicles.

If it’s unmarked, there is no problem turning on flasher lights and calling dispatch (423-3116) or 911 and inform one of our people, and then yield,” Trotter said. “Both red and blue lights are required for law enforcement. I’d rather have motorists do that (yield and call) in that situation.”
