City council awards road project contract
A & K Earth Movers was awarded a contract for the New River Parkway extension project by the Fallon City Council Tuesday night during its regularly scheduled meeting.
The City Council approved the contract in the low-bid amount of $371,000 for an extension required as part of the terms of the city’s land sale agreement for the Dairy Farmers of America Fallon Plant. The extension is set to connect Rogers Road and Wildes Road with work that will include roadway construction, curb, gutter, sidewalk and underground utilities.
City Engineer Jim Souba informed council members six bids were received for the project. The vote to approve was 2-0 (councilman James Richardson was absent).
The plant, targeted by DFA officials to open by the end of 2013, will be equipped to process 2 million pounds of raw milk daily and at full capacity will produce 90 million pounds of dried dairy ingredients annually for customers in the U.S. and worldwide.
Council members also discussed the following items:
• Heard a presentation regarding activities and projects of the Western Nevada Development District from Ron Radil, executive director. The WNDD region covers a six-county area that includes Churchill, Lyon, Humboldt, Pershing, Mineral, Storey, Douglas, Carson City and Washoe counties.
• Heard a presentation of the Police Department report for February.
Note: Mayor Ken Tedford Jr. noted the city has scheduled its 13th annual Keep Fallon Green Day for April 8-13. This is a time when city refuse crews collect large items such as appliances and furniture on regular pick-up days as part of a week-long effort that is capped off by a community-wide cleanup by volunteers on Saturday, April 13.
