December’s Veteran of the Month selected
Gov. Brian Sandoval recognized John Matthews as Nevada’s December 2014 Veteran of the Month in a recent presentation at the state capitol.
Nevada Department of Veterans Services manages the monthly program.
“As I read about John’s background and the amount of hours he contributes to our veterans, I find it humbling to be here with him today,” said Sandoval. “I thank him personally for his efforts and on behalf of the people of Nevada I congratulate him.”
Mathews was nominated for his 20 hours of volunteer service he spends each week as a Disabled Veterans Service Office since April of 2013. His other volunteer work in the Reno area includes assisting veterans to the local food pantry under Operation Feed Back as well as over 30 hours per week he spends assisting veterans at the Veterans Resource Center. It’s also appropriate for Mathews to be December’s recipient as he has played Santa Clause for many years for the Nevada Army National Guard’s 442nd Signal Battalion’s Christmas Party.
“John is another example of the great volunteerism our veterans show throughout Nevada,” said Kat Miller, NDVS director. “And we continue to encourage veterans and the public to nominate veterans in their community that like John, are doing volunteer work for veterans and the community in general.”
