Fernley Republican Women adopt airman

Special to the LVN
Jessica Reed

The Fernley Republican Women’s newest adopted soldier (or airman) is Staff Sgt. Jessica Reed of the Nevada Air Guard.

Reed’s grandmother, Diana Wallin of Yerington, referred her to the FRW. Reed graduated from Damonte Ranch High School in Reno in 2007.

During her interview she said, “I knew that I wanted to get involved in international politics. I was just not sure in which capacity. I never envisioned myself joining the Air Guard although I am very glad I did.”

Reed graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2013 where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in International Affairs Now she is pursuing a Master of Science degree in International Studies and is scheduled to graduate in August.

Reed’s goal is to work in Southeast Asia, which influenced her decision to study Japanese and Chinese. She follows the example of her father, Capt. Michael Reed of the Nevada Air Guard. She has served in Afghanistan since June 2014. She came home last month to visit as well as to fulfill her military duty in Reno. At the the beginning of this month, she returned to Afghanistan where she serves in direct support to her fellow airman and soldiers. Reed said she appreciates being adopted by the FRW, and the organization said the members are proud to support Reed and thanked her for her service.

The FRW’s Caring for America/Adopt-a-Soldier Program collects nonperishable foods for the Fernley Food Bank, along with donations of funds and care items for their adopted soldiers. The military personnel need single serving food items, personal care items and, most especially, cards and letters from home. FRW also collects children’s books during the year and delivers them to the Ronald McDonald House and the Renown Hospital Children’s ward in September. All contributions for any of these important programs will be greatly appreciated. Financial contributions may be sent to the FRW at P. O. Box 412, Fernley, NV 89408.

The FRW is a group of women (and men as associate members) who share similar conservative values and ideals, and who are dedicated to increasing the influence and effectiveness of women in the cause of good government through political education and active political participation.
