Flash flood warning issued

A flash flood warning for most of western Nevada has been issued by the Nevada Weather Service through 10 p.m. today.

The warning also includes Churchill County and Fallon.

The outlook for today and Thursday:

This Afternoon: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 85. Northeast wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. Northwest wind 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Thursday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 81. West wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Thursday Night: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 55. Southwest wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

THE SIERRA LATE THIS MORNING…AND EXPAND NORTH AND EAST INTO

NORTHEAST CALIFORNIA AND WESTERN NEVADA DURING THE AFTERNOON AND

EVENING. THE HIGHEST RISKS OF FLASH FLOODING SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 50

ARE FROM ROUGHLY 10 AM TO 4 PM…WHILE THE HIGHEST RISKS NORTH

OF HIGHWAY 50 ARE FROM ABOUT 2 PM TO 10 PM.

* GIVEN THAT MANY AREAS HAVE RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL RAINFALL OVER

THE PAST 3 TO 5 DAYS…FLASH FLOODING WILL BE QUICK TO OCCUR IF

STORMS WITH HEAVY RAINFALL REDEVELOP TODAY. THE WATCH INDICATES

THAT THE INGREDIENTS ARE THERE TO CREATE STORMS WITH HEAVY

RAINFALL AND FLASH FLOODING…BUT NOT A GUARANTEE THOSE STORMS

WILL DEVELOP. IF EXCESSIVE CLOUD COVER FORMS THIS MORNING…THAT

WILL LIMIT HOW STRONG STORMS MAY GET AND LOWER THE FLASH FLOOD

RISK.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT FLOODING OF SMALL STREAMS…CREEKS

AND OTHER DRAINAGE AREAS IS POSSIBLE WITHIN THE WATCH AREA.

RECENT BURN AREAS ARE AT PARTICULARLY HIGH RISK OF FLASH

FLOODING. PEOPLE IN THE WATCH AREA SHOULD MONITOR

WEATHER.GOV/RENO FOR UPDATES AND BE PREPARED FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION

SHOULD HEAVY RAINS AND FLOODING OCCUR OR A FLASH FLOOD WARNING BE

ISSUED.
