The Fallon girls tennis team dropped Truckee and earned at least a share of the league title.

If Fallon beat South Tahoe on Thursday (results not available at press time), the Lady Wave earns the Northern Division I-A championship and the No. 1 team seed at the regional tournament next week in Reno.

Fallon and Truckee engaged in an epic match on Tuesday, won by the Lady Wave after the teams exhausted all tiebreakers.

After splitting the 18 matches, the two foes went into a tiebreaker. Again, the teams tied, winning three matches apiece. Fallon, though, won the match based on the number of games won, which came to 35-33.

The Lady Wave fell behind early in the match as Fallon lost four of the six first-round sets. No. 2 singles player Lindsey Golding slipped past Truckee’s Rebecca Ziegler, 9-7 (7-6), while the No. 2 doubles pair of Melanie Nuckolls and Izzy Martinez won 6-4.

Fallon’s fortunes turned in the second round, as Golding and No. 1 singles player Sarah Inglis picked up wins along with the doubles teams of Debra Beyer and Kali Strong and Kayla Bekiares and Haley Lindsay.

The doubles duos earned wins in the third round along with Inglis as the match remain tied.

In the tiebreaker, the doubles teams stepped up and won all three matches including a 7-1 victory by Nuckolls and Martinez to lift Fallon.

Boys tennis comes up short

The Fallon boys tennis team fell 12-6 at Truckee on Tuesday.

The No. 1 doubles duo of Tyler Wood and Martin Beyer picked up a pair of wins, while No. 1 singles player Joe Jamieson also had two victories.

Adam Wadsworth and Jumel Villacarlos, playing No. 2 doubles, also scored a pair of wins.

The boys hosted South Tahoe on Thursday in the final match of the regular season.

Girls golfers fourth at Elko

The Fallon girls golf team took fourth at the Elko tournament last week.

Fallon carded a team score of 441 led by a 98 from Sarah Evans. Hannah Evans recorded a 105, Tabetha Park shot a 109 and Vivan Ugalde tallied a 129 for the Lady Wave.

Sarah Evans leads Fallon with a 108.8 average with Park second (112), Ugalde third (118) and Hannah Evans fourth (118.8) and fourth.

Lowry won the team event with a 372 followed by Elko (381) and Fernley (405). Fernley’s Brittany Evans and Truckee’s Sienna Scibird took medalist honors as each carded an 80.

To date, Elko leads the Northern Division I-A standings with 49 points followed by Lowry (46), Fernley (40), Fallon (33), Dayton (27), Spring Creek (20) and Sparks (five). Truckee and South Tahoe do not have enough players to qualify for team standings.

The top three teams and top five individuals from non-qualifying teams earn a beth in the state tournament.
