Special to the LVN
Retired U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Will Mayberry, left, recently administed the oath to his son, Tanner, who received his commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

Tanner Mayberry, son of Will and Jan Mayberry of Fallon, graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno recently and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United State Marine Corps at a ceremony at Naval Air Station Fallon.

Mayberry lived in Fallon from 1996-1999 and from 2006-2010, while his father was stationed as NAS Fallon. Tanner Mayberry left in 2010 to attend college.

While earning his degree, Mayberry completed Marine Corps officer training through the Platoon Leaders Course (PLC) at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., attending two six-week summer sessions where he was trained, evaluated and screened as an officer candidate to ensure he was physically fit, knowledgeable and of sound moral character, the qualities expected of a Marine officer. Having successfully completed PLC, Mayberry was eligible to be commissioned once he graduated.

While living in Fallon, Mayberry earned his Eagle Scout award as a member of Boy Scout Troop 1776 and attended the National Rifle Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio, three times, placing as the No. 2 Marksman and No. 1 Sharpshooter in the United States.

Mayberry will be departing for Marine Corps Base Quantico to attend the Marine Corps Basic Officer Course for six months with about 200 new officers and then he will head to NAS Pensacola (Florida) to begin flight training to become a naval aviator. He hopes to fly the F-35 Lighting II, also known as the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
