Nevada National Guard commemorates Flag Day

CARSON CITY — Everyone is invited to join the Nevada National Guard as it recognizes and pays homage to the United States’ flag and celebrates the U.S. Army’s birthday during the annual Nevada National Guard Flag Day Ceremony on Friday at 10 a.m., in the Nevada Capitol Assembly Chambers in Carson City.

The ceremony will also mark the 239th birthday of the U.S. Army. (Note the official date for Flag Day is Saturday, June 14.)

Brig. Gen. Michael Hanifan, the commander of the Nevada Army Guard, is set to give the Flag Day address. Hanifan, a Douglas County resident, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1986 and now commands the 3,100 Soldiers in the Nevada Army Guard.

Command Sgt. Maj. Jared Kopacki is set to deliver the Army’s birthday message. He has served as Nevada’s state command sergeant major since September 2013 and is responsible for advising the adjutant general on all Nevada Army Guard enlisted affairs. Kopacki has served in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom and was also an instructor at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas.
