The Truckee Carson Irrigation District will have a special meeeting to ask water users if TCID should sell its interest in water storage rights and the dam facilities at Donner Lake, which is west of Truckee, Calif.
SIERRA SUN |

The Truckee-Carson Irrigation District will conduct a public workshop at Fernley City Hall on Monday and at the Churchill Commission Chambers on Tuesday, both from 6-8 p.m. to discuss an up-coming special election.

TCID’s special election is scheduled for Jan. 4. District polling locations are the District Office at 2666 Harrigan Road in Fallon (Carson Division) and Fernley City Hall, 595 Silver Lace Blvd. (Truckee Division).

The Truckee-Carson Irrigation District’s board of directors recently approved a sale agreement of Donner Lake assets dependent on a special election among the valley’s water users.

The question to be considered by voters at the special election is whether or not the district acting through the board of directors should sell its interest in water storage rights and the dam facilities at Donner Lake, (Nevada and Placer counties California) for the purpose of settling all litigation relating to Donner Lake, the breach of the Truckee Canal at Fernley in 2008 and the Truckee-River Operating Agreement (TROA).

TCID District Manager Rusty Jardine said the sale would satisfy existing legal claims including compensation to Fernley property owners whose property was damaged by floodwaters almost eight years ago. He also said that an approved sale by the water electors should result in the lifting of a court imposed restriction of water flow in the Truckee Canal of 350 cubic feet per second (cfs).
