Wellington man dies in crash
Wellington resident Joseph Miceli, 59, has been identified as the pilot killed in a plane crash found in the Pine Nuts east of Carson City, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.
Miceli left Wellington from Farias Wheel Airport, near his Pinon Drive home, on Saturday heading for Carson City in a 1946 Cessna C120.
Shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday, Carson City authorities were notified that there was plane wrecakage located in the Pine Nut Mountains several miles east of Sierra Vista in southern Carson City.
At about the same time, Miceli was being reported missing to Lyon County authorities, Furlong said.
Furlong said authorities don’t know at this time if Miceli ever arrived at the Carson City airport, or if he was returning to Wellington. The exact time of the crash has not been determined.
On Monday morning, rescue crews from the FAA, Carson City Sheriff’s Office, and Carson City Fire Department went to the crash site, and were able to remove Miceli’s body.
According to his Linked-In page, Miceli is an investment manager who owns Seneca Property and manager member of Valley View Airport LLC, a home fly-in community located near Farias Wheel Airport.
The Farias Wheel Airport web site had an airplane for sale that matches Miceli’s Cessna. According to the FAA, the aircraft’s N number had been revoked and a warning that the aircraft’s registration indicated that it may not be suitable for operation.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash. Miceli’s body was taken to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed.
