Wetlands and wings youth workshop, field hunt

Staff Report

Youth ages 10 to 17 years old are invited to apply for the Fall Wetlands and Wings outdoor workshop and bird hunt by Monday.

The free workshop will be held Saturday and SundayY from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. each day.

Up to 20 selected participants first receive expert instruction at the Fallon Trap Club from Lahontan Valley Claybreakers members and NRA-certified shooting coaches on Saturday. They learn how to fit, hold, safely carry and shoot a shotgun. Live fire range experience is included and mandatory for those taking part in the bird hunt on Sunday.

On Sunday, education stations start the day at the Lahontan Valley Bird Dog Club south of Fallon. Students will learn upland bird identification, habits and habitats; and safe field hunt methods as part of a team. Additional trap range practice will be available prior to the hunt. There will be outdoor challenge games, with prizes for top scores. Teams of youth hunters will take to the planted fields for upland birds (chucker or pheasant) after lunch. Youth will learn how to field dress, care for and cook their birds at home with tasting samples provided.

Steve Sawyer, Wetlands and Wings co-chairman, said this program is unique in that there is no charge to the kids who participate, and that everything is provided for them including guns, ammo, training, lunches, adult mentors and promotional items donated by area businesses.

Wetlands and Wings is part of the nonprofit Friends of Stillwater group who provide hands-on interactive outdoor learning opportunities for area youth. Started in 2010, over 250 youngsters have participated in the successful program. Financial support is received from Sparks Rotary, the National Rifle Association, Nevada Record Book Foundation, Gemini Inc., Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority, and private donations.
