Author Mortenson’s donation demonstrates love for libraries

Nevada Appeal Staff Report

Western Nevada College Librarian Valerie Andersen experienced Greg Mortenson’s good-hearted generosity first-hand when she attended the author’s lecture in Carson City earlier this month. She waited in line for two hours to have her copy of “Three Cups of Tea” signed by the author.

“I was amazed that he stayed and ensured that everyone had the opportunity to have books signed,” Andersen shares. “He took time to speak to each person, take pictures and write a message in each book.”

When Andersen finally reached the front of the line, she told Mortenson that she was a librarian at the local college. He smiled and expressed that he loved libraries because of the support he has received from them in his efforts to build schools. Mortenson reached over to his pile of books for sale and gave Anderson two signed books for the college’s juvenile collection.

“His kindness brought me to tears. I felt like I shared a third cup of tea with him,” Andersen said.

Mortenson donated the young readers edition of “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Journey to Change the World…One Child at a Time” and the children’s book “Listen to the Wind: The Story of Dr. Greg & Three Cups of Tea.”

Both available to check out from the WNC Library.
