Carson City is nationally considered a bike-friendly community, based off of it’s scenic trails, engagement, and education according to The League of American Bicyclists.

Since May is National Bike Month, Carson City’s bike culture gives many locals and businesses a great excuse to go outside and take a ride while supporting the cause.

Thanks to Carson City’s very own Muscle Powered, the community can get in on the fun with upcoming hosted events.

The local organization promotes bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure around town, including advocacy for accessibility, safety, and trail development.

This week’s Bike Month event kicks off this evening and other events are scheduled throughout the month. Pick your favorite route—or ride them all.

Ongoing Event: Women’s Mountain Bike Ride Tuesdays

Throughout the summer, local ladies go on a mountain biking adventure through the Sierra with a guide. The group meets up at 5:30 p.m. at the parking lot on Foothill Road. This event continues beyond Bike Month.

Wednesday: Mountain Bike Night Ride

This single track mountain bike adventure starts from Foothill Drive and ascend into the Ash Canyon trail system, created by Muscle Power’s trail coordinator Jeff Potter. Potter received a national award in 2015 for building the Ask to Kings Canyon trail.

Although this event is expected to have a full moon, lights are required for the ride, which begin at 7:30 p.m.

Bike to Work Week Competition, May 15-19

Commute to work by bike all week while competing against other locals and businesses!

Participants compete for title categories such as the Average Team, Miles, Number of Trips, and more. Riders may ride as many or as few days as they wish, and teams can consist from one member to 30. On a annual average, between 12-20 teams participate.

The main goal is to get people to ride bikes rather than cars and just win by riding.

Last day to sign up for the challenge is the day it starts, May 15. For more information on challenge rules, visit musclepowered.org/corporate-challenge.

Ride of Silence, May 17

Starting at 7 p.m. at Telegraph Square, cyclists will gather to take the roads in a silent procession to honor those who have been injured or killed in cycling accidents on public roadways. Over 445 events are scheduled nationwide for this event, according to rideofsilence.org.

Official National Bike to Work Day, May 19

Kick off your workday with a bike ride through town and get a free cup of coffee for riding your bike!

As the finale of Bike to Work Week Challenge, local coffee shops will be providing free coffee to those commuting to work on a bicycle.

As an optional ride, riders can meetup at 7 a.m. at the Carson Tahoe Medical Center parking lot to ride south through Carson City, and stop at a commuter station for a cup of coffee before heading to work.

The public also is invited to the Bike to Work Week Party after work, starting at 6 p.m. at McFadden Plaza for free.
