Carson City Alzheimer’s group plans to ‘bag memory loss’
Local volunteers have collected more than 1,000 gently used purses for Carson City’s first Baggin’ Memory Loss, a purse re-sale fundraising event for the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2010 Memory Walk.
The sale will be from
9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at
the Carson Nugget.
“We are so grateful to the Nugget for donating the space to us,” said organizer Corneil Vacirca. “We have been collecting purses for two months now.”
“They held the Memory Walk here for a number of years, but the participation has dwindled, but those of us on the Carson City planning committee decided we didn’t want there to be nothing happening here,” Vacirca said.
“The Alzheimer’s Association serves so many people in Carson City, Dayton, Minden, Gardnerville and all of Northern Nevada,” she said.
The volunteer organizing committee has cleaned, priced and marked purses of various brands, colors and styles. Purses range in price from $1, $2, $5, $10, and up to $50. They even include some designer bags with names like Dooney & Burke, Coach and XOXO.
A Hermes handbag will be the prize of the day during a silent auction, Vacirca said.
“We aren’t sure of its authenticity, but they can be thousands of dollars,” she said.
All proceeds from the Baggin’ Memory Loss event will benefit the Memory Walk, the signature fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association. The Northern Nevada Memory Walk takes place at 10 a.m. Oct. 9 at the Sparks Marina.
Last year, the Reno Baggin’ Memory Loss event raised $10,000, she said. This year, they only made about $1,000.
“We’re hoping for $5,000. We had a lot of pre-buyers at our sorting party, so we already have a $250 head start,” Vacirca said. “I’d be ecstatic if we reached our goal.”
