Carson City Board to hear appeals, get drought report
Appeals to Carson City’s Board of Supervisors from previous Planning Commission decisions will concern board members Thursday.
The board also will hear a report on drought and other water issues from the Carson Water Subconservancy District.
Board members tackle an appeal from commission action filed by WSCC, Inc., the applicant firm, which wants an increase in square footage of the sign allowed for a medical marijuana dispensary planned at 2765 U.S. Highway 50 East. The other appeal was filed by two nearby property owners due to a special use permit to authorize additional classrooms and modification of a school site playground at Bethlehem Lutheran School at 1845 Mountain St.
WSCC, Inc., is challenging commission action that increased the medical pot dispensary sign from 15 square feet to 30 square feet rather than to the 140 square feet the firm had sought. The staff recommendation to the board is to reject the appeal and uphold the commission’s decision.
The same staff recommendation accompanies the appeal on the Bethlehem school case. According to the staff report, the special use permit request from Bethlehem was reviewed and conditionally approved in August, and there was public testimony then objecting to the site plan from some neighbors. “This testimony led the Planning Commission to direct the applicant to modify the proposed project’s layout,” according to city staff.
The appeal indicates there is still opposition from Jared Feser and Barbara Nicholas, who made their cases in letters to city planners and the commission.
The Carson Water Subconservancy District report will come from the district’s general manager, Ed James. He will discuss the drought, flood studies, watershed survey matters and related items earlier in the meeting at which the planning appeals are set. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St., and likely will end by mid-day. The agenda includes no break for lunch.
