Carson City Downtown presentation set for Monday

Nevada Appeal staff report

Open house events at which the public can view designs for a downtown makeover at the 30 percent stage are scheduled for Monday, The Carson City Public Works Department stated.

The downtown design presentations for just under a third of the outlook envisioned will be in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St., Monday at 12:30 p.m. and 5:30. Public works and other city government staff will be on hand to make the presentation and field public reaction or questions.

The downtown streetscape improvement design stage will continue throughout 2015 with other opportunities for public reaction at open houses when the 60 percent and 90 percent stages are prepared. The streetscape design is keyed on Carson Street to three vehicular traffic lanes, bicycle lanes, widened sidewalks and other pedestrian-friendly changes, city officials stated.

The design, however, also will encompass a community plaza on a closed West 3rd street from Carson to Curry streets and eventual changes along Curry Street. The project is pegged to cost up to $11 million and is backed by fund raised via the 2014 one-eighth of a cent increase in city sales tax for a citywide capital improvements program.
