Carson Valley Arts Council presents Janice Joplin’s original band

The Carson Valley Arts Council will start 2012 with a Baby Boomer Bash! On Friday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. Janice Joplin’s original band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, will perform in Minden’s CVIC Hall. (Continue reading for information on a free Q & A session on Friday afternoon, Jan. 13.) Tickets for the concert are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. For the best seating, patrons are encouraged to arrive during the 6-7 p.m. social time, which will feature the local band Big Bad Wolf.

There will also be beverages for purchase and snacks provided by Tahoe Ridge Winery, one of the Arts Council’s original sponsors.

While Big Brother is perhaps best known for its affiliation with Joplin and the mega-hit “Me and Bobby McGee,” the band is also important in the history of rock music. According to original BBHC band member Sam Andrew, “Big Brother and the Holding Company was a prime example of a band where the chemistry was right, where the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. You cannot buy or manufacture the natural feeling that was in that band. Big Brother played from the heart and soul with the goal of achieving a direct connection with the innermost feelings of the audience.”

For those who want to learn more about Big Brother, the ’60s psychedelic music movement, or the history of rock music, there will be a free Q&A session with the band at the Douglas County Library from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, Jan. 13. For more information on Big Brother and the Holding Company, go online to http://www.bbhc.com.

This concert is one of six in the 2011-2012 concert series presented by the Carson Valley Arts Council. CVAC memberships and subscription tickets are still available at considerable savings over purchasing tickets individually.
