A Carson City man jailed Saturday morning for allegedly robbing a convenience store was additionally booked on a false imprisonment charge for preventing the clerk from leaving.

Donald Lee Newbury, 39, a welder, is being held on $25,000 bail.

According to arrest reports, Newbury entered the Jackson’s Market at Rand Avenue and Highway 50 East just before

11 a.m. Friday night and demanded the clerk empty the register.

After receiving

the cash, Newbury allegedly returned to his room at the Rand Motel. A man at the motel directed police to Newbury after deputies showed

tenants a photograph of

the bandit from the surveillance video.

After a brief standoff, Newbury was arrested at

1:30 a.m. Saturday.

On Sunday, a detective was watching the surveillance footage of the robbery when he noticed that the clerk walked away from the register three times, but was ordered back each time by Newbury, the report states.

The clerk said she would not have returned to the register if she hadn’t believed Newbury had a gun in his pocket, the report states.
