Brian Duggan/Nevada AppealGov. Jim Gibbons arrives at the state Capitol Saturday for more closed door meetings with lawmakers to close an $888 million budget gap.

The optimism of a potential close to the 26th Special Session today was palpable Friday night, but maybe no longer after a no-show by the governor staff at a meeting this morning with legislative leaders

Today is day five of the special session called on by Gov. Jim Gibbons to close an $888 million budget gap.

After meetings on Friday, lawmakers and the governor said progress had been made, but sticking points still remained, including how much to cut from education and a potential veto for a bill that would make the state eligible for federal Race to the Top education grants.

Lawmakers and the governor also say they have a tentative deal to keep state furloughs at eight hours rather than increasing them to 10 hours.
