Carson City motorists should prepare for some new wrinkles in their commute, as a major road-widening project begins Monday.

The widening of Fairview Drive will bring the closure of westbound lanes from Saliman Road to Roop Street through August. Eastbound traffic will still be allowed through, and business access will not be hindered.

The widening project is part of the $45 million, Phase 2A of the Carson City Freeway that entails the construction of roadway two miles between Highway 50 East and Fairview Drive. The first half of this project is slated for completion next summer, followed at an undetermined time by the construction of freeway from Fairview Drive to Highway 50 West.

Freeway construction near Fifth Street will see the occasional weekend closure to through traffic in the coming months.

Scott Magruder, spokesman for the Nevada Department of Transportation said motorists who use Fifth Street may experience detours as crews work on the freeway. Motorists are urged to become familiar with alternate routes.

Fifth Street will go over the proposed freeway in that area and there will not be freeway access from Fifth Street once completed.

Other projects will continue to impact motorists as well.

On Highway 50 East between Russell Way and Humboldt Lane, a road-widening project will continue. Magruder said within two weeks, construction in the eastbound lanes will be complete, and both east and west traffic will be shifted into the eastbound lanes so that crews can complete widening of the westbound lanes. The shifting of lanes should not hinder traffic in the area. There will still be four lanes of traffic, said Magruder. That portion of the project should be completed by late August, early September, he said.

He said there is no other construction slated on state roads in Carson City this summer.

On city roads, pavement repair projects will take place on Fairview Drive between Fifth Street and South Edmonds Drive on June 10 and South Roop Street between Fifth and Musser streets on June 12 and 13 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. On June 11, pavement repairs will be made on Roop Street near Governor’s Field between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. On June 14 Roop Street will be closed between Fifth and Musser streets between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.
