Earthquake reported east of Truckee

The effects of a 3.7 magnitude earthquake east of Truckee on Tuesday could have been felt in this area, a seismologist said Wednesday.

Ken Smith, the seismic network manager at the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno, said the first of a sequence of quakes was strong enough to be felt miles away.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to hear people feeling a 3.7 all the way up in Tahoe and in the Washoe Valley area,” he said. “That’s a pretty mild earthquake, but if you’re close enough, you can get some good shaking.”

The series of earthquakes in the wilderness west of Mount Rose, about 12 miles east of Truckee, began around noon and lasted until almost 10 p.m.

They ranged on the scale from 1.4 to 3.7.

No damage was reported.
