Fuji Park improvements nearly complete

Families will have a new playground complex to visit by the end of the month as a $1.08 million improvement project at Fuji Park nears completion.

“Everything is going very well and on schedule, thanks to the weather and everything,” said Steve Kastens, Carson City Parks and Recreation director.

Carson City supervisors are slated to approve an additional $8,000 in consulting fees for the project at their meeting Thursday.

The project includes paving the area around the exhibit hall, installing an underground irrigation system, building a $210,000 restroom facility, utility work, and installing a new playground.

The city contracted with Lumos and Associates Inc. as the project construction consultant for a $103,586 fee. The consultant drew the project plans and is overseeing construction.

“We ran into some areas we didn’t expect to and needed more assistance from (the consultants),” Kastens said.

The general contractor, Interstate Utilities, will be paid $982,481 for the improvements.

The first phase is expected to be completed by the end of the month, Kastens said.

The city will then begin talking with the Fuji Park Users Coalition, a group of people involved in larger shows and exhibits who regularly use park facilities, to prioritize future improvements to the park.
