The holiday season is officially underway in the Carson City area, with caroling, holiday crafts, Santa sightings and other events planned this weekend.
Carson High School’s student musicians are taking over the Carson City Community Center for a string of holiday performances. The CHS Band with wind and jazz musicians will perform 7-8:30 p.m. today. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for students. CHS students with ID pay $1. Additionally, catch the CHS Drama team’s Winter Showcase at 7 p.m. today through Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St.
Carson City’s offbeat holiday community show is returning to the Brewery Arts Center today. The 15th annual Joyful Noise performance, presented by Cherie Shipley and Lake Tahoe Entertainment, will feature Trey Stone, Mark Ashworth Cherie and John Shipley and the six-piece Joyful Noise Chorus. The show starts at 7:30 and music runs until 9 p.m. in the BAC’s Performance Hall. Tickets are $8 for children; $12 for seniors and BAC members and $15 for general adult admission. Santa and characters from the classic holiday story, “The Polar Express,” will be brought to life on hourlong train rides. Polar Express trains depart from the Carson City Eastgate Depot, 4650 Eastgate Siding Road Thursdays through Sundays until Dec. 23. Each trip includes a souvenir silver sleigh bell to remember the journey. Ice skating at Arlington Square Ice Rink on N. Carson and W. Robinson streets, across from the Carson Nugget, will be open through Jan. 27. Skate sessions are 3-5 and 6-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 3-5 and 6-10 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-5 and 6-10 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-5 and 6-9 p.m. Sunday. Bring your cameras to see Santa at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Christmas crafts and other activities also will be available. The holiday tradition of Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus’ production of Handel’s Messiah continues in Carson City at 7 p.m. Friday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Catch TOCCATA’s other Messiah performances at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Theresa Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe. The 12th annual production offers general admission for $30, and preferred seating for $40 and $15 for youth/students. Seniors are offered a $5 discount. Students 18-23 are $5, and under 18 enters free.
Free holiday events are being held at Genoa Candy & Coffee, located at Carson Lanes at 4600 Snyder Ave. Cookie decorating is from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Fridays through Sundays until Christmas for children 10 and younger. Frappe Night, offering an assortment of frappuccinos for $5 per person, is 5-7 p.m. Fridays through Jan. 1. It includes chess, checkers, gin rummy and other games.
Virginia City’s Christmas on the Comstock, a month-long holiday celebration, offers photos with Santa Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Virginia City Visitors Center, 86 S. C St.
Santa will join the crew of the V&T Railroad on Saturdays and Sundays until Dec. 18. Trains run from the Nevada State Railroad Museum, 2180 S. Carson St. Children are invited to visit with Santa and write him a letter while enjoying holiday treats and other festivities. Tickets are $5 per person; children under 4 are free. The 8th annual Cookies with Santa takes place 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Cafe at Adele’s, 1112 N. Carson St. This local tradition combines a visit and pictures with Santa, music, and cookies all for the cause of collecting toys and raising money to provide Christmas to area children in need. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children. Every adult is asked to bring an unwrapped gift to be donated to help in assuring all children have a gift this year. Join staff at Buckland Station State Historic Park for some holiday cheer and pioneer traditions on Saturday. Take a self-guided tour, help decorate the house for the holidays and enjoy sweet treats and period crafts. The event — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — will be collecting nonperishable food items for local families in need. Food in glass containers will not be accepted.
Live holiday music will fill Ormsby Post Acute Rehab in two free performances, one at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and another at 5 p.m. Dec. 20. The Children’s Performance Choir of Dayton will perform on Saturday, with the Carson Chamber Singers performing at the second performance. Santa will be on hand at a Christmas party for children ages 0-12 from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at Carson City Elks Lodge. The event, sponsored by Elks Lodge No. 2177 and the Carson City Emblem Club No. 507, includes bird house decorating and ornament and Christmas card making. Each child will receive a book, candy cane and stocking. Beans and weenies, sweet potato fries, corn muffins, juice, and Christmas cookies will be served. Elks Lodge is at 515 N.
